President Benigno Aquino III did the right thing in his appointment of new Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Mayor Magdaleno Peña of Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, said in a press release yesterday.
He said he is grateful to Aquino for not appointing Justice Antonio Carpio as chief justice of the Supreme Court, and that he believes the President had read the opposition he filed to the Judicial and Bar Council.
He said that perhaps, PNoy has learned from the mistakes of the past, as Carpio is one of the mistakes of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who appointed him as associate justice after GMA hijacked the presidency from President Erap. Everyone knew that Carpio later on turned his back on GMA, Peña said in his press release.
He said he wished Sereno luck and success, it added.
Sereno, t he youngest and first female CJ of the Supreme Court, was appointed on August 16 and took her oath of office before Aquino on Aug. 25 in Malacañang.*
