1,300 participants
join Fun Run/Walk

The Hua Ming Fun Run/Walk dubbed “Run Ko Pag-Asa Mo”, event on Aug. 19 drew 1,300 participants, who ran and walked from St. John's Institute to Robinson's Place Bacolod, a press release from the school said.

Among those who joined were businessmen, professionals, policemen, students and even visually impaired kids from SPED Bacolod, who raced in the 5K, 3K and 1K distances.

Romulo Balinas Jr. topped the 5k male category with Rommel Hulleza grabbing second place and SJI Batch 1993 graduate Dino Pizon, settling for third place.

Thirteen-year-old Geraldine Hulleza ruled the girls' side with Gella Mayang of Run Club Bacolod in second place and Natalia Joy Sy of SJI Batch 2006 coming in third.

Zabiel Maculob Jr. dominated the 3K male category, and Maia Yusay of St. Scholastica's Academy and a member of Triathlon Association of the Island of Negros in the women's division. SJI senior student Andre Robert Ang topped the 1K event for the male category.

Sta. Clara Walker's Club bested three other walker groups to capture the 5K Group Walk Challenge title and the P10,000 cash prize sponsored by Cityscape Residences, the press release said.

The project, spearheaded by the SJI Alumni Assn, was undertaken with the cooperation of the SJI Parents' Council with the proceeds from the event to be set aside for the SJI Alumni Association Scholarship program.

The program aim is to give tuition subsidies to economically-challenged but academically responsible students to enable them to continue their high school education in SJI. There are now 13 active scholars in the program, the press release said.

Stephen Tan, president of the SJIAA, said the event was generously supported by individuals, groups and companies.

More than 50 BTAO/TMU personnels acted as road marshals during the event.
