New allocations
on PH sugar set

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Sugar Regulatory Administrator Ma. Regina Bautista Martin yesterday issued Sugar Order No. 1 setting sugar allocations for Crop Year 2012-2013 “to place those engaged in the sugar industry on a basis of economic viability.”

The SRA Sugar Board has set the 2012-2013 sugar allocations at: “A” or US quota sugar - 10 percent, “B” or domestic sugar - 82 percent and “D” or world market sugar - 8 percent.

Martin said that, with such allocations, the country will be able to meet the regular US quota of 138,827 MT, have a buffer stock for possible additional US quota of around 61,993 MT, with 2.03 MT for domestic demand including buffer stocks and around 247,000 MT for the world market.

Crop year 2011-2012 ended with a total raw sugar production of 2.243 million MT and an estimated ending balance of 30,144 MT for “A” or U.S quota sugar, 143,661 MT for “B” or Domestic sugar and 58,793 MT for “D” or world market sugar, Martin said.

Ending balance for refined sugar is 199,924 MT which will add up to the raw sugar balance of 143,661 MT for the domestic buffer stocks, she added.

She said this crop year, the country shipped out 326,379 MT to the world market and 200,561 MT to fill the U.S. as quota.

Meanwhile, a 5 percent increase in production for crop year 2012-2013 is estimated at 2.356 million MT. This estimate may be revised as soon as SRA generates an updated crop estimate which may be influenced by weather patterns in the coming months, Martin said.

Sugar Order No. 1 states that domestic demand is estimated to be about 2 million metric tons for crop year 2012-2013.*CPG
