NegOr braces for ‘Pablo’
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Officials of Negros Oriental and Dumaguete City are preparing for super typhoon “Pablo” (international code name: Bopha) as it entered the Philippine area of responsibility last night.

Gov. Roel Degamo yesterday warned the public to prepare themselves, and for the Negros Oriental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to ensure that mitigating measures are in place to minimize the impact of the tropical depression.

Satellite images of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration show that Negros Oriental and other parts of Central Visayas are in the path of the super typhoon, that is believed to be even stronger than “Sendong” that devastated parts of Mindanao, Dumaguete City, and other nearby areas in the province on Dec. 17, 2011.

‘Overfishing threatens tuna’

MANILA – Asia-Pacific fishing experts yesterday warned against depleting tuna stocks, saying the region needs to reduce its catch of the vulnerable bigeye species by 30 percent.

Participants at the conference of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) said action must be taken not only to preserve tuna resources but also other marine life that are accidentally caught with them.

Some tuna varieties are overfished while others are near their limits, participants at the meeting said. Additionally, tuna fishers often catch sharks, rays and other fish in their nets, depleting their numbers as well.

Broadway musical
set Dec. 7-8 at SU

A Broadway musical, “Into the Woods”, will debut at the Silliman University Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, on December 7 and 8, with matinee and gala shows at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively, a press release from the school said.

The show features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and book by James Lapine. It is the story of a baker and his wife, who journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers, and some magic beans to lift a curse that has kept them childless.

The musical will showcase the school’s thespians and singers, directed by Vanessa Gaspay-Nezamloo, with musical direction by Elizabeth Susan Vista-Suarez, and includes oft-recorded songs, like the “Children Will Listen” and “No One is Alone”, the press release also said.
