‘Pablo’ wrecks 349 houses,
causes 2,875 to evacuate
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Typhoon Pablo destroyed 43 houses and damaged 306 others in four towns and two cities in Negros Occidental, and caused 2,875 to evacuate as a preventive measure against its wrath Tuesday night, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office said yesterday.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said the provincial government will provide financial assistance to those whose houses were destroyed and damaged, while food assistance and medicines were delivered by the PSWDO to evacuees early yesterday.

The PSWDO will conduct an inventory so the provincial government can provide assistance of P5,000 each to those whose houses were destroyed and P3,000 for those damaged, he added.

Let us all thank God that, although some areas in Negros Occidental were affected by “Pablo,” it was not to the extent expected, and for His sparing most parts of the province, the governor said.

As of 11 a.m. yesterday the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services lifted all storm signals over Negros Occidental and sea travel resumed.

Hinobaan, that was lashed by strong winds Tuesday night as Pablo exited the vicinity of Negros Occidental, was the worst hit with 25 houses destroyed and 291 damaged in barangays 1,2, Asia, Alim and Bacuyangan.

La Carlota came in second with 16 houses destroyed and two damaged in barangays Yubo, Haguimit and Batuan, followed by Sipalay City, with one house destroyed and nine damaged in Barangay Vista Alegre.

Murcia town had one house destroyed and two damaged in Barangay Abu-abo, Pontevedra – one damaged in Barangay Recreo, and Pulupandan - one damaged in Barangay Canjusa.

Meanwhile, 779 families or 2,875 individuals evacuated in five cities and five towns living in landslide and flood-prone, and coastal areas Tuesday night as a precaution but returned home soon after, except for those who lost their homes, Merle Garcia of the PSWDO said.

Pablo brought in strong wind but minimal rain.

The evacuations took place in San Carlos, Escalante, Bago, Kabankalan and Sipalay cities, and Don Salvador Benedicto, Pulupandan, Pontevedra, Isabela and Hinobaan towns. *CPG
