Ailyn Tumbale grabbed the gold in long jump girls 13-under to hoist the Negros Occidental banner high as competition in athletics went full blast in the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission Batang Pinoy 2012 National Finals in Iloilo yesterday.
Tumbale joined the list of other athletics gold medalists, that include Iloilo Province’s Lanz Halongon in shot put boys’ 14-5, Christopher Ejica of Dasmarinas City (2,000-meter run boys 13-under), Charies Mae Violanta of Laguna (shot put girls 14-15), Lierrence Sayenga of Marikina (long jump boys 13-under) and Jasmines Tayeo (high jump girls 14-15).
Also making a headway in the tally of early winners are the swimmers from Quezon City, led by Raissa Regata Gavino, who hauled three gold medals from the Iloilo Sports Complex swimming pool.
The 12-year old Gavino, a seventh grader at the Multiple Intelligence International School, topped the 400-meter freestyle and 50-meter breaststroke finals of the girls 11-12 category and was a member of the 4x50-meter medley relay gold-medal team.
Kirsten Chloe Daos (400-m freestyle and 200-m butterfly girls 13-15) and Jeremy Brian Lim (400-m freestyle and 200-m butterfly boys 13-15) added to the gold-medal harvest of Quezon City tankers.
San Juan City, Manila and Bulacan also bagged two gold medals each in swimming. Andre Resol (200-m backstroke boys 11-12) and Maria Magdalena Olaguer (200-meter backstroke girls 11-12) provided the golds for San Juan City while Roxanne Ashley Yu (200-m backstroke girls 13-15) and Regina Maria Castrillo (200-m butterfly girls 11-12) delivered for Manila.
Rafael Barreto delivered Bulacan’s two golds by ruling the 400-meter and 100-meter free style events of the boys 11-12 category.
Meanwhile, Baguio ruled the first day of the wushu competition at Iloilo National High School with gold medals from Faith Liana Andaya (san lu quan girls), Alexson Omegan (nando boys) and Vanessa Jo Chan (girls short weapon) bagging a gold each.
Iloilo grabbed two gold medals in the sanda event courtesy of John Riccz Belamala (45-kg male) and Eudelio Colonaris (48-kg male).
In boxing, Panabo City and Mandaluyong City sent three of their boxers into next round in the preliminary stage held at the Western Visayas State University. Leyte, Mandaue City and Iloilo City had two fighters each safe in the next round.*with reports from the PNA
