Security guards to get P794K
from underpaying firm: DOLE

Three security guards who filed labor complaints against a company in Bacolod City received P794,000 as payment of differentials for three years, Labor and Employment regional director Ponciano Ligutom, said yesterday.

Ligutom told the DAILY STAR that the underpayment of wages and other benefits of the security guards whose names they withheld, were discovered during a routine inspection in Bacolod City this year.

DOLE-Negros provincial director, Ma. Victoria Mondragon, said the E & R Security Agency that handled the security guards and the Primex/PhiltrackCoproration in Bacolod City where they were deployed were jointly and severally liable for the payment of back wages of the workers.

Mondragon, however said, the amount was charged solely to the Primex/PhiltrackCoproration, because the security agency was not capable of recompensing the workers.

Among the violations of the employers were non-payment of overtime work, incentive leave pay, and holiday premiums, she said.

She also reminded companies that subcontract their jobs to an agency, to check their background and financial capacity so they will not be held solely liable if problems arise.

Ligutom said companies should take care of their employers and not abuse them because they are working for their families.

He also said DOLE will immediately issue the writ of execution and will freeze the bank accounts of employers if proven that they do not pay the correct wages of their employees.

Meanwhile, about 141 applicants were hired on the spot yesterday at the jobs fair at Robinsons Place-Bacolod organized by DOLE Negros, the Bacolod Public Employment Service Office, and ABS-CBN-Bacolod.

Mondragon said about 2,800 job seekers attended the job fair that was participated in by 32 local companies and 12 overseas manpower services as part of the 79th anniversary of DOLE.*LTG
