Gold for Negros, Bacolod in
Batang Pinoy nat’l finals

Emy Rose Dael of Lopue’s Table Tennis Association won two gold medals, the Negros Taekwondo Union Tigers topped four events, and Silaynon Joshua Junsay grabbed two silvers and a bronze, to raise the banner of Negros Occidental and Bacolod City high in the POC-PSC Batang Pinoy 2012 National Championships last week in Iloilo City.

Dael, the current No. 1 junior player in the country, trained under the mentorship of LOPTTA president Leonito Lopue.

She won the gold in girls’ singles against Angelica Sanches of the National Capital Region and together with John Michael Castro, ruled the mixed doubles event (3-1) against Vince Oliva and Celine Marie Guillergan of host Iloilo City.

Sanchez, who bowed to Dael in straights sets (3-0), settled for the silver, while Melody Intong of Region XII, finished with the bronze medal.

In the mixed doubles event, LOPTTA paddlers Francis Garganian and Angela Borbon took home the bronze.

Dael and her LOPTTA teammates, earned the privilege of representing Bacolod City in the national finals of Batang Pinoy this year after prevailing in their respective event in the Visayas leg, held last month in Tacloban City.

Meanwhile, after hauling five gold medals in Tacloban, Junsay settled for the silver in 50m butterfly and 100m backstroke, and a bronze in 100m and 200m freestyle, and 100m backstroke in Iloilo City.

Paying a courtesy call to Silay City Mayor Jose “Oti” Montelibano yesterday, Junsay, along with his father Noli, thanked the city government for sponsoring his participation in the national competition.

Also bringing pride to Bacolod City are the NTU Tigers of taekwondo coach JimJim Chua, who won four gold medals.

Chua said that among the players from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, the Bacolod team displayed advanced skills and scored above 10 points difference against their respective opponent by posting more than 20 points at the end of their matches.

The NTU Tigers coach was commended by the organizers for having top caliber players under his supervision.

The taekwondo jins who brought home gold medals from Iloilo City were: Jason Locsin, Irene Therese Bermejo, Stephanie Lamayo, and Alyssa Marie Amihan.*NAB
