Two persons died on the spot when their motorcycle skidded into the gutter of the highway at Alijis Road in Bacolod City at about 1 a.m. yesterday, SPO1 Dennis Perma, head of the Bacolod Traffic Authority Investigation Section, said.
Perma identified the victims as Nikki Pacantang, 22, and Romeo Cuba, 28, both of St. Vincent Subdivision, Brgy. Alijis.
The victims were on their way home after buying food when the motorcycle hit the gutter and they were both thrown off, he said.
They may have been traveling at a high speed because they landed far from their motorcycle, Perma added.
Initial investigation by PO12 Wilson Go, Perma said, showed that the relatives of the victims told Go they had been drinking alcoholic liquor before they went out, although they could not determine the amount they took.
Perma said the area is accident-prone and that they have recorded more than seven mishaps there in the fourth quarter of this year.
The victims were not wearing protective head gear when the accident happened, he also said.
Meanwhile, a woman crashed her Toyota Fortuner SUV through the front door of the BDO bank at Lopez Jaena-Ipil-ipil streets in Bacolod City at about 9:30 a.m. yesterday.
Mary Ann Tueres, 47, of Eroreco Subdivision, Brgy. Mandalagan, was driving a hydraulic powered vehicle with plate number FGM 221, Perma said.
Based on the initial investigation by PO1 Jun Garong, Tueres tried to reverse her vehicle to get out from the parking area, not realizing that it was in drive mode.
Perma said it is also possible that Tueres had stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes.
The Traffic Management Unit has no grounds for impounding the vehicle but Tueres is charged with reckless driving because there was negligence on her part. She is also liable for the damage to bank properties, he added. *LTG
