‘Ukay-ukay’ clearing today
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The City Legal Office Composite Enforcement Team will conduct clearing operations around the Bacolod Public Plaza and downtown area to ensure that vendors comply with the guidelines set by the city, its team leader Cesar Beloria said yesterday.

Beloria said they will start clearing the public plaza of ukay-ukay stalls today based on the December 10 letter of acting Secretary to the Mayor Moises de la Cruz to the CLO.

In his letter, De la Cruz had requested the City Legal Office Monday to demolish the stalls selling “ukay-ukay” or used clothing at the Bacolod Public Plaza after the awardees failed to voluntarily demolish their structures last week.

An order was issued Thursday for the 68 kiosk owners selling ukay-ukay to voluntarily demolish all structures within three days from receipt of notice due to violation of their guidelines which the awardees had agreed to, he said.

Beloria said he met with the vendors of the ukay-ukay stalls Monday evening and they inspected the public plaza when City Administrator John Orola Jr. arrived.

Beloria said the vendors had proposed that they will change the products they are selling and will help beautify the area by putting up Christmas lights and decors.

They will not be refunded the P800 they have paid to the city for the special permit if their stalls are demolished for violation of the guidelines, he said.

Acting Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson had said that only kiosks selling fruits will remain at the plaza until December 31, as this has been a tradition during the Christmas season.

Meanwhile, Beloria said they will also inspect the downtown area to ensure that sidewalk vendors do not exceed the one meter by one meter area allowed them. *CGS
