The Philippine Crop Insurance Inc. in Western Visayas has released P423,627 in claims of 79 farmers in Negros Occidental as of last month through the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance, Dina Genzola, senior agriculturist of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, said yesterday.
Genzola said the claims covered 115.35 hectares of land damaged by calamities like floods, heavy rains, and pest infestations.
The farmers filed their notice of loss to OPA, which will be forwarded to the agriculturists assigned in their area to evaluate the damage cost and losses, she said.
Through the program, farmers will be able to recover their losses since they insured their farmlands with PCIC, Genzola also said.
PCIC has released P2,622,438 to pay the claims of the 702.17 hectares of land damaged in the past 11 months, benefiting 571 farmers, Genzola said.
She said the insurance also provides a health care program for farmers through the Negros Occidental Comprehensive Health Program and encourages the participation of local government units to subsidize the premiums of the farmers.
All members can benefit from the maximum crop insurance of P17,680 per hectare, life insurance of P10,000, forced savings, Development Bank of the Philippines ATM cards, and project opportunities and technological trainings, Genzola added. *Niña Carmina Nidal
