Head of transport group
tagged in welder’s death

BY ADRIAN NEMES III
A welder was killed when he was sideswiped by a multi-cab driven by the leader of a transport organization at Lacson Street in Bacolod City at about 10 p.m. Thursday.

Senior Police Officer 1 Dennis Perma, chief investigator of the Traffic Management Unit, said yesterday that Ricardo Paderna Lawan, 57, of Purok Masinadyahon in Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod died while being treated at Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital at about 3 a.m. yesterday.

He said Jessie Ortega, secretary general of Samahang Tsuper at Operator’s Negros, who was driving the multi-cab, had not turned up before the police as of press time yesterday.

Perma said what happened was apparently a case of hit-and-run because Ortega did not help his victim. However, Ortega later said he did not ignore his responsibilities to the victim and only went home after the incident because he was not feeling well.

Investigation conducted by Police Officer 2 Daniel Matias Ballesteros showed Lawan was crossing the street in front of the Rolling Hills Memorial Chapels when he was sideswiped by Ortega’s vehicle.

Ballesteros said that there were witnesses who claimed that Ortega was speeding and was under the influence of alcoholic liquor.

Ortega denied that he was speeding and said that it was Lawan who was under the influence of alcoholic liquor, adding that he did not see Lawan immediately because he crossed the street suddenly.

Asked why he did not surrender to the police, Ortega said he was advised by his lawyer, whom he did not identify, to rest because his blood pressure shot up.

He added that his camp is now coordinating with Lawan’s family for a possible settlement.

Meanwhile, one of the five motorists injured at the collision of two motorcycles in Barangay San Dionisio, Bacolod City, Wednesday, died while being treated at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital Thursday.

Police Officer 3 Docelio Pachoro yesterday said a relative of Leonard Rey Mapano, 19, of Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod told him that he had passed away at about 1 p.m.

Mapano and Junelice Sevilla were on board a motorcycle driven by Reylyn Advincula, 24, of Brgy. Granada when it collided with the motorcycle of Bernie Valdez, 26, of Murcia, Negros Occidental.

Sevilla, Advincula, Valdez and his back-rider, Garry Alleluya, were injured in the collision the police said.*APN
