Suarez sees
peaceful 2003 polls
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

If Provincial Comelec Supervisor Jessie Suarez is to be believed, the election in Negros Occidental next year will be peaceful.

Suarez, who presided over the Joint Peace and Security Coordinating Conference at Camp Alfredo Montelibano Sr. in Bacolod City, yesterday said most areas in Negros Occidental where intense political rivalry had been observed in the 2010 elections, are no longer considered problematic.

He cited Pulupandan where the son of incumbent Mayor Magdaleno Pena is running unopposed. But he expects another intense political rivalry in Escalante City, where incumbent Mayor Melecio Yap is being challenged again by former Mayor Santiago Barcelona.

The election period will start Jan. 13 next year.

Senior Supt. Milko Lirazan, officer-in-charge of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, said they will also start enforcing the gun ban on that day, as deputized agents of the Comelec.

Comelec Resolution No. 9561-A provides that carrying of firearms outside of residence or place of business during the election period is prohibited.* GPB
