Talisay tames
Province in TKP opener

Talisay City opened its title retention bid with a double overtime victory over Rogers/Province of Negros Occidental, 122-115, in the Class A competition of the 12th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at the Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.

Joemil Garrido scored nine of his game-high 24 points in the second overtime to lead Talisay City to its opening day victory.

Talisay took the lead at halftime, 40-37, and continued to be on top in the third quarter at 69-64.

In the fourth quarter, Joemarie Bayhon and Rodel Canino combined for 19 points for Province to force an overtime at 93-all.

A balanced offensive on both sides kept the game close.

After Leo Bat-og made a free throw to tie the game in the dying seconds of the first overtime, Talisay failed to make a buzzer-beater move as the players thought they were on top and was still in the lead.

Backstopping Garrido were Sonny Abaring with 22 points, former USLS Stinger Rodgie Gelasan added 18, Mamerto Santillan scored 14 points, De La Peña delivered 12, and Atoy Salazar chipped in 11 points for Talisay.

Canino led Rogers/Province with 22 points, Bayhon  and Bat-og  made 20, Mark Ramos tallied 15, Peewee Demonteverde shot 14, Richard Verayo with 10 points, and Bert Celis had 6 points.

In Class B action, Buddy-Johann Kendrick blitzed Nena’s Rose Shopping, 88-84.

A Robert Alegario jumpshot gave Nena’s Rose an 84-79 lead with three minutes left in the game but Buddy JKT closed out the game with a 9-0 run to steal the victory.

The rally started with Buddy Eufre hitting a quarter court trey followed up by a free throw from Vincent Javelosa who missed his second shot.

Eufre grabbed the rebound and passed the ball to Mark Binguan, who nailed a corner triple for an 86-84 lead. Franklyn Madrid iced the contest with a baseline drive with eight seconds remaining.

Binguan led JKT with  23 points, Eufre added 22, Madrid scored 18, Mark Coo finished with 12, all in the second quarter.

Alegario topscored for Nena Rose with 16 points in a losing effort, Joseph Tiu and Matthew Yap had 13 points each, Kenderson Hao contributed 11, and Vincent Tan made 10 points.

Meanwhile, RU Shredder pulled away in the fourth quarter to roll past   an undermanned Rapide Auto Expert, 99-86.

Rapide played with only six players but Jomi Montinola and Dr. Emil Guanzon scored 10 and 9 points, respectively, in the third canto to overcome  a 51-45 deficit and take the lead at 72-71 going into the fourth quarter.

But Rapide had no answer to the frontline of RU as Paolo Li scored 16 points and Cris Javelosa added 6 points to put Rapide away.

Li finished with 28 points, Ton Ton Chua delivered 17, John Montemayor had  14, Javelosa and Toffel Tan with 12 points each, and Biboy Yap shot 7 points.

Montinola had 28 for Rapide, Guanzon made 16, Monroe Chua hit 15, Omar Galunan scored 12, and Berto Uysang with 11 points.* with a report from Stephen Tan
