Cops shoot suspect
in hostage-drama

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

A man who allegedly took his cousin hostage recently for an unknown reason was shot by the police for  allegedly failing to heed appeals to surrender peacefully.

The suspect, identified as Allen Kinikito Carbas, 20, Purok Sto. Niño Cadawinonan was hit in  his forearm and is now out of danger after being treated at a local hospital. He  is now detained while the police prepare charges for Alarm and Scandal and violation of B.P Blg. 6, against him, Dumaguete police chief, Supt. Crisaleo Tolentino said.

Tolentino said Carbas was allegedly intoxicated and was causing trouble in the neighborhood  around 10:30 p.m. Thursday,  and  relatives tried to pacify him.

Carbas then went home but suddenly, grabbed his cousin, identified as Jane Edward Trumata Carbas, 18,  of Purok Gumamela in Calindagan, Dumaguete, and pointed a bolo at her neck.  Jane  was spending the night at the suspect’s house at the time, Tolentino said.

Policemen negotiated with Carbas to release the victim for about 30 minutes but to no avail.

Meanwhile,  the victim could be heard screaming for help from a room in the house,  Tolentino also said.

As a last resort, Tolentino said he had to fire at the suspect through  window when the suspect’s elbow and forearm were exposed. When the suspect was hit, his the hostage managed to run away Tolentino said.*JFP
