DENR verifying status
of land at ‘gold sites’

The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office II of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Negros Oriental is verifying the status of lands where illegal gold digging and excavation are have been reported, to determine if they are owned by government or by private individuals.

CENRO II chief Mario Aragon said he has sent two of his men to Catipon in Barangay Bonawon, Siaton in Negros Oriental to conduct a survey through the Global Positioning System.

Aragon said he believes that Catipon is generally a public land. However, even if individuals claiming ownership can present pertinent documents, his office would still make the necessary recommendations to the DENR regional office in Cebu City regarding on illegal quarry operations in Catipon.

Cops shoot suspect
in hostage-drama

A man who allegedly took his cousin hostage recently for an unknown reason was shot by the police for  allegedly failing to heed appeals to surrender peacefully.

The suspect, identified as Allen Kinikito Carbas, 20, Purok Sto. Niño Cadawinonan was hit in  his forearm and is now out of danger after being treated at a local hospital. He  is now detained while the police prepare charges for Alarm and Scandal and violation of B.P Blg. 6, against him, Dumaguete police chief, Supt. Crisaleo Tolentino said.

Tolentino said Carbas was allegedly intoxicated and was causing trouble in the neighborhood  around 10:30 p.m. Thursday,  and  relatives tried to pacify him..

Gov’t will not leave
peace table: Deles

Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Quintos Deles reiterated Friday that the government will not be the one to throw in the towel in the peace negotiations, a press release from the office of Deles said yesterday.

“Government is determined not to be the one to leave the table. Government is committed to continue to look for ways to move the process forward one way or another,” she said during her speech after receiving the 2011 Metrobank Foundation Professorial Chair for Public Service and Governance Award at the Escaler Hall of the Science Education Complex in Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City.
