Cop tagged in killing
of banker, injuring 1

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

A banker died while his nephew was seriously injured when they were shot allegedly  by a policeman in front of a convenience store  near the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office headquarters in Brgy. Estefania, Bacolod City,  Saturday night.

Killed was Jonel Ealdama, 49, of Camingawan in Brgy. Estefania, Bacolod City, Station 4 commander, Chief Insp. Adonis Rosales, said yesterday.

Ealdama sustained a gunshot wound on his left side and the bullet hit his heart. He was rushed to the Bacolod Doctor’s Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Ealdama was employed by the Development Bank of the Philippines at  the time of his death.

His nephew, Karl Ealdama, 16, also of Camingawan,  sustained a gunshot wound on his left hand and the bullet hit his abdomen. He  was  also rushed to the BDH, where he is now confined.

The suspect, Police Officer 2 Mauro Taleon,  a member of the Provincial Mobile Group, has already been disarmed and is now in the custody of police station 4, Rosales said.

Taleon denied the accusations but Rosales said he was positively identified by Karl’s parents, Joel and Grace Ealdama, as the person responsible for the shooting.

Investigation showed that the Ealdamas were talking outside the 4Ps Convenience store near the Petron gasoline station when Taleon, who was with four other policemen, reportedly got out from the establishment and told them to keep quiet.

A verbal argument then occurred between Jonel Ealdama and Taleon, who allegedly drew a gun and fired at Karl Ealdama. Jonel Ealdama attempted to run but was also shot by Taleon, Rosales said.

NOPPO Director Senior Supt. Allan Guisihan said  he has  already ordered a through investigation on the incident and assured that there will be no whitewash.

Guisihan said he also wants to disarm and detain Taleon’s companions but Rosales said there is no reason to do that.

He said  he is coordinating with the Bacolod City Police for the filing of  criminal complaints against Taleon while NOPPO will handle the administrative charges against him.*APN
