President Benigno Simeon Aquino III presented a check for P5.7 million for the cash-for-work program of areas in the province devastated by the 6.9 magnitude earthquake.
Governor Roel Degamo received the check from the President which will be turned over to the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office that will identify the beneficiaries.
The President personally visited greatly-damaged areas in Guihulngan City and the town of La Libertad. He also expressed his sympathy to the families whose loved ones died in the landslide due to the strong earthquake.
President Aquino gave a check for P3.3 million to Mayor Ernesto Reyes of Guihulngan and another P1 million to La Libertad.
The local social welfare office will identify the beneficiaries for the cash for work program. The beneficiaries will be asked to clean accumulated rubble on the national highway, government facilities and public places.
Each beneficiary will receive 75 percent of the minimum wage.
President Aquino said the cash-for-work program is part of the government’s effort to help the victims recover from the calamity.
Meanwhile, the President also ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways to immediately provide temporary detours off the damaged bridges and national highways in order not to further paralyze the relief operations in devastated areas.
He ordered the DPWH regional office to submit the project plan for the Martilo bridge in La Libertad within seven working days.
The President said there is no time to waste since hundreds of victims are waiting for relief and rehabilitation.*
