Murder raps filed vs. cop

Murder and frustrated murder charges were filed at the Bacolod City Prosecutor’s Office yesterday against a policeman for the fatal shooting of a banker and the wounding of his son in Brgy. Estefania.

The charges were filed against Police Officer 2 Mauro Taleon of Brgy. Dancalan, Ilog town, in Negros Occidental and assigned as member of the Provincial Police Public Safety Company, Supt. Santiago Rapiz, chief of the Bacolod City Police Office said.

Evidence presented against Taleon were the affidavits of the witnesses, including those of the relatives of victim Jonel Ealdama, 49, of Camingawan in Brgy. Estefania; the autopsy report and photographs of the crime scene, Rapiz said.

He added that the medical certificate of Ealdama’s son Karl, 16, was also presented as evidence.

Station 4 commander, Chief Insp. Adonis Rosales, said Taleon tested negative for gun powder nitrates in a paraffin test done on him. But Rosales said this is non-conclusive and will not affect the charges they filed.

Results of the cotton swabbing on the firearms of Police Officer 2 Eric Moncal and Police Officer 1 Gary Sarap, the companions of Taleon, meanwhile, yielded positive for gun powder nitrates but this does not mean they have participation in the crime, Rosales said.

Rapiz, meanwhile, said that the younger Ealdama is still confined at the Bacolod Doctor’s Hospital and will undergo an operation to remove the bullet from his body.

Investigation showed that Jonel and his son were talking to Joel, his younger brother, outside the 4Ps Convenience Store near the Petron gasoline station a few meters from the NOPPO headquarters when Taleon reportedly came out of the establishment and told them to keep quiet.

A verbal argument allegedly occurred between Jonel Ealdama and Taleon that led to the fatal shooting.*APN
