Football festival
kicks off today

The four-day football festival in Talisay City kicks off today with the Mayor Doc Eric 7-a-side City Football Festival in four age group categories at the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College.

Teams from Iloilo, Negros Oriental, Cebu and Negros Occidental will be competing for the top honors in Under 13 boys and girls, Under 18 boys, and 38 Above categories of the tournament held to coincide with the 14th Charter Anniversary of Talisay City.

After the two-day tournament, Warren Concepcion, Executive Assistant and City Sports Administrator said they will be holding the Mayor Doc Eric National Football Festival during the weekend in Talisay Football Field.

The national bootfest is expecting teams from different ballclubs in the country to compete in the 10-Under boys/girls mixed event, Under 15 boys, ladies open, and men’s open age categories.

The tournament, Concepcion said, is in line with the thrust of the city government to bring into the next level its grassroots football development program.

Last month, the city government, in partnership with the Teleperformance Bacolod, brought to Talisay Simon Greatwich, one of the mainstays of the Philippine men’s football team, Azkals.

Greatwich lauded Talisay in its effort to help promote football in the city and nurture the interest of young athletes in the sport.

Mayor Saratan, on the other hand, said the visit of Greatwich in Talisay will inspire their young booters to improve their craft as they also aspire to become members of the national team.

To strengthen the football development program of the city, Saratan said they already conducted coaches training in the barangays, tapping the participation of football mentors who will be tasked to echo their learning to the schools.

Talisay has also been joining local football tournaments in the city and figured prominently in the 1st Negros Open Football Tournament.*NAB
