Emergency loan available for
flood victims in Visayas

State pension fund Government Service Insurance System announced yesterday the availability of emergency loans to members affected by heavy rains and flooding in the Visayas last December.

GSIS President and General Manager Robert Vergara said the emergency loan can be availed until February 27, by government employees residing or working in the Province of Aklan; Cadiz City, Negros Occidental and nine municipalities in Leyte namely Abuyog, Dagami, Javier, Julita, Mayorga, San Miguel, Tabontabon, Tanauan and Tolosa.

He said more than 10,000 families from these areas, which were declared under the state of calamity, suffered from heavy rainfall in December last year, which damaged infrastructure, crops and properties.

The GSIS has a total of 13,040 active members in these areas and if all these avail of the loan, gross disbursement would amount to P260.8 million, Vergara said.

Eligible to apply for the loan are active members who are not on leave of absence without pay, have no pending criminal or administrative charges, have no arrearages in the payment of mandatory social insurance contributions, and have no loan that has been declared in default.

Vergara said GSIS members with outstanding emergency loans would be allowed to renew the loan if the borrower has paid at least 12 monthly installments.

Application for emergency loan may be filed through the GWAPS kiosk using either the eCard or UMID eCard.

GSIS members who lost their cards but who are eligible to apply for the loan may apply over-the-counter in any GSIS office.

Vergara said GSIS members in agencies whose loan privileges were suspended because of non-remittance of premium and loan payments are not eligible to apply for the emergency loan. *PNA
