Neg.Or. at P56 million

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Department of Agriculture yesterday reported  P56 million in damage to crops in earthquake-hit  areas of Negros Oriental due to landslides that hit the First District,  which is considered  the corn basket of  the province.

This was reported by Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala to  President Benigno  Aquino yesterday, adding that the DA is extending 1,000 sacks of certified corn seeds,  100 bags of open pollinated cord seeds, and 2,000 packets of assorted seeds that are ready for distribution to the farmers.

Alcala also reported the destruction of farm facilities worth  P2.72 million in Region 6, and 17 irrigation systems destroyed in Region 7 that need immediate restoration.

Investigation underway
on expired milk, drinks

Investigation is ongoing on an undetermined volume of expired packets of powdered milk and chocolate drinks recovered by residents at the coastal portion of Barangay Bantayan in Dumaguete City on Wednesday afternoon.

Residents said they saw what looked like an oil slick of items being carried southward about 50 to 100 meters from the shore of Silliman Beach around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Some of the packets had washed ashore and as soon as residents discovered they were powdered milk and chocolate drinks, some of them, especially children, gobbled them down.

The Philippine Coast Guard has deployed two search-and-rescue vessels to Negros Oriental to help in the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts in the wake of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit the province and other parts of the Visayas Monday.

The two SARVs are the 35-meter long BRP Davao del Norte and the 56-meter long BRP Pampanga, which are docked at the port in the capital city of Dumaguete, said Lt. Commander Agapito Bibat, commander of the local Coast Guard Station.

Both ships are alternating their trips to give time for refueling and loading of relief goods, rescue workers and other volunteers. They are also to ferry earthquake victims and patients needing further medical attention per recommendation of doctors in the quake-affected areas.
