USLS beach volley team to
defend title in Bayawan

The University of St. La Salle women’s beach volleyball team will be heading for Negros Oriental today to defend its crown in the 2012 Bayawan City Women’s Beach Volleyball Invitational slated this weekend at the city’s boulevard.

The defending champions will be battling teams from University of San Carlos and University of San Jose-Recoletos from Cebu, host Foundation University-Bayawan, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, and Negros Occidental Volleyball Association in this year’s edition of the tournament. Also joining the competition is a team from Singapore.

Aside from medals and trophies, cash prizes will be awarded to the winners with the champion team getting P10,000, P7,000 for the first runner-up, P5,000 for the second runner-up, and P3,000 for the fourth to eighth placers.

In bagging the championship and the P8,000 cash prize last year, Sheryl Denila and Kay Aplasca of USLS Team B prevailed over fellow La Sallians Patty Orendain and Charmaine Moralde of USLS Team A, 25-21, 25-10.

The tournament is an annual sporting spectacle in Bayawan in celebration of its fiesta on February 17 to 18.

Bayawan City is a coastal city located in Negros Oriental, approximately 102 kilometers south of Dumaguete City and about 278 kilometers from Bacolod City.

The women’s beach volleyball tournament was organized through the efforts of James Ludweg Geconcillo, event coordinator, Joe Guirit of Dumaguete City Sports Office as tournament manager, and former Philippine Volleyball Federation President Roger Banzuela as chairman of the invitation and communication committee.*NAB
