87 grains dealers caught
violating NFA regulations

Out of 1,840 grain establishments inspected in Negros Occidental, 87 were apprehended for violating the regulations on selling and retailing grains last year, Rodrigo Macaya, National Food Authority senior enforcement and investigation officer, said yesterday.

Macaya said grain establishments composed of retailers, wholesalers, and millers were apprehended for non-compliance of regulation like, license display and renewal, putting the price tag and signboard, and securing the grains retailing license, aside from their business license.

Grains retailers who failed to comply with the requirements pay the administrative fine.

The NFA was able to collect P57,000 from violators in 2011, Macaya said.

Compared to its 2010 collection, revenues dropped by 59.57 percent but Macaya said that many of the grains dealers complied with NFA requirements.

He said it is a good thing that grains retailers are following the standards and requirements of NFA to avoid penalties.

It is not about the revenue collection alone, but it is more on the voluntary compliance of the dealers, Macaya said.

He also called establishments whose NFA licenses are expiring to renew it immediately to avoid delay and penalties. They must also present their income tax return, Macaya added. *LTG
