Two-day chess tilt
opens today in Bata

The two-day 2nd Barangay Bata Chess tournament opens today with 60 chess players joining the competition at the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Gym in the barangay.

The tournament will have two categories, the Non-Master and Kiddies 12-Under, tournament director and Bata Chess Club president Philip Caudilla said.

Adopting a a 7-Swiss System, each player will be given one hour to finish the game.

Expected to attend in today’s opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. is Philippine Olympic Committee chairman and former Bacolod City congressman Monico Puentevella. He will be joined by Bacolod City councilor Archie Baribar in the opening rites.

Leading the cast of players in Non-Master division is 12th Negrense Professional  Chess Tournament champion Ernie Abanco along with Joel Pimentel, former Negrense professional champion Ted Ian Montoyo, Rey De La Peña and Josevito Tapulgo, among others.

The tournament offers cash prizes of P3, 000 and trophy for the champion in open category; P2, 000 and trophy for the first runner-up and P1, 000 and trophy for the second runner-up.

For Kiddies 12-Under, the champion will receive P2, 000 and trophy; P1, 500 and trophy for the first runner-up and P1, 000 and trophy for the second runner-up.*NAB
