Two soldiers from the 32nd Division Reconnaissance Company of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division found P90,000 in cash in the retrieval site in Brgy Solonggon, La Libertad, Negros Oriental, a press release from the Army said yesterday.
Privates Danny Faigane and Marlon Vera were part of the retrieval teams deployed to La Libertad after the 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Negros Oriental on February 6.
The two informed 1st Lieutenant Gerald Deles, 32DRC commanding officer, about the money and Deles said they immediately looked for the owner of the house where it was found.
After the money was turned to owner Virginia Callora, Vera was rushed to the Brigade headquarters for treatment of wound in his right hand, caused by a sharp piece of galvanized iron he accidentally gripped during the retrieval. The wound needed eight stitches but he is now recuperating.
Major General Jose Mabanta, 3ID commander, commended Faigne and Vera for their honesty.
Meanwhile, soldiers retrieved the body of Elizabeth Zalafa, 84, of Solonggon, Sunday while troopers of the 11th Infantry Battalion recovered the body of Asorio Mahinay at noon yesterday in the landslide area of Planas.
The Army’s 542nd Engineer Construction Battalion also cleared the road towards Planas in La Libertad, which made it easier for bring relief goods to quake victims, the press release added.*
