Three-way tie at the top in
Tan Kek Pin Class A

JSY Transport dealt University of St. La Salle Nhojs its first defeat, 101-79, Sunday night in Class A of the 12th Tan kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym.

The win allowed JSY to share the top spot with USLS/NHOJs and Talisay City with three wins and one loss.

Talisay registered its third win by routing Fil-Sino Bmeg Mang Inasal, 95-77 as Rogers/Province of Negros Occidental outclassed University of Negros Occidental-Polvora’s Law Office, 92-72.

In taming USLS/NHOJs, JSY relied on its inside-outside offense to take a 49-38 lead at the half, then continued to counter any Stingers’ uprising in the third canto as the latter struggled to narrow the gap.

Ely Olarte delivered three straight treys for JSY to post a commanding 84-64 lead with 6:46 remaining. Alfie Villariza and Chad Paez combined to keep the Stingers at bay and kept the lead above 20 points.

Olarte finished with 19 points while Villariza scored 17, Arnol Laureño, Ruel Balgos and Rolly Jaca contributed 16 points each and Chad Paez made 7 points.

Nhojs was led by Nikos Cuenca, who tallied 16 points, Kevin Villafranca scored 12, Allen Dionela shot 11, Harvey Eslawa made 9 points, and Allen Delagente, 7 points.

Meanwhile, Province of Negros Occidental came out firing in the first half as it pulled away at the break, 53-28, to improve to 2-2 and beat UNO-R which dropped to 1-3.

Peewee Demonteverde paced Province with 14 points, Joemarie Bayhon and Mark Linaja scored 13 each, Mark Ramos shot 12 points, an d Ryan Maningo had 9 points.

Joemel Paderog led Polvora in a losing effort with 15 points, Jeff Jacinto added 13, Derder made 15, and Richer Santillan had 8 points.

In the nightcap, Fil-Sino tied Talisay City in the first half at 47all, but failed to sustain the momentum as Talisay stepped on the gas in the second half.

Talisay City was led by Rodgie Gelasan with 24 points, backstopped by Sonny Abaring with 17 markers, Jade Paul Calma 12, Joemil Garrido 8 points, and Ervin De La Peña, 7 points.

Richard Caberte finished with 17 points for Bmeg Mang Inasal, Robbie Jalando-on plucked 12, Ritchie Militante and Carl John Oquindo hit 11 points each, and Arnold Gono contributed 8 points.

The elimination round in Class A wraps up this Sunday with crucial matches between JSY Transport and Talisay City at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the semifinals.

USLS Nhojs will also try to conquer UNO-R Polvora’s Law office for an automatic semis slot at 4:30 p.m.*with a report from Stephen Tan
