Iloilo’s Paraw Regatta 2012 to
feature dragon boat race

A dragon boat complete with rowers and drummers will highlight the the 40th Ruby Anniversary edition of the Iloilo Paraw Regatta on Friday along the Iloilo River.

The dragon boat exhibition will be provided by the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University which also sponsors the Paraw Regatta rowing and paddling competitions along the Iloilo River.

On Sunday, more than 100 sailboats will vie for top honors in the country’s biggest and grandest sailboat race along the 35-kilometer Iloilo Strait.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and city lone district Rep. Jerry Treñas will lead the celebration that will also usher in the 75th Charter year anniversary of the city.

Paraw Regatta Foundation chairman Manuel Villa said cash prizes await winners of the race in two categories divided into Category A for sailboats not more than 24 feet long and Category B for sailboats over 24 feet in length.

The regatta festival has a theme “Sailing the Best Wind” in celebrating its 40th year with a classic race competition among sailboats and outriggers as main focus of attention.

Other special side events of the one-week celebration include “Pinta Layag”, miniature paraw making contest, photo exhibits, search for 2012 Miss Paraw Regatta, torch parade, and “Sinamba sa Regatta” dance and song competition.

Also lined up in this year’s festival are: deep sea fishing competition, paraw slalom, rapid chess tournament, beach ultimate Frisbee, beach volleyball, jet ski competitions, and flatland skimboarding.*PNA
