City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council head, Joemarie Vargas, admitted yesterday that Bacolod City may not be spared if a tsunami does occur in the area.
Vargas, who spoke before the City Peace and Order Council meeting at the Bacolod Government Center, said, however, that the effect of a tsunami in the City will be minimal compared to other areas in southern Negros.
He said once the Negros trench moves, it will create huge ripples that would cause a tsunami and would likely hit the shorelines of southern Negros Occidental, Panay, Guimaras, Palawan, Mindoro and Zamboanga Del Norte
Vargas added that the Pandan point in Pulupandan will be the worst-hit area in Negros Occidental.
To prepare against tsunami occurrence, the Bacolod City government through the CDRRMC met with officials of the shoreline barangays so they could set-up a tsunami warning system.
Vargas said they expect barangay officials to present their tsunami warning systems during their workshop this week.
He also said that they have finished the assessment of the structures in Bacolod City and there were no enormous damages reported.
The only disaster in the world that no one can predict is the earthquake, so everybody needs to be prepared, he said.*APN back
