Unbeaten teams
fell in TKP cagefest

Undefeated Class B teams 888 Chinatown Square and RU Shredder  fell to separate opponents Monday night as their winning streak ended in three games in the 12th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym.

Alfie’s Construction rallied past 888 Chinatown Square, 88-84, while RU Shredder overhauled a 26-point third quarter deficit but fell short against Buddy Johann Kendrick Tan.

888 Chinatown could not protect its 80-78 lead in the last two minutes as Alfie’s Peter Galon scored six straight points and Bobby Yap’s triple sealed the victory for Alfie’s.

It was a 42-all standoff at the half as Alfie’s Chibun Uy scored 13 points, while 888 countered with Ralph Richard Tan’s three treys, Jolly Castillo’s nine points and Rey Pandoro’s 8 points.

Marc Lo and Tan delivered nine and six points, respectively, to push 888 on top at the end of the third quarter, 67-63, even as Bong Palo had seven points for Alfie’s.

Galon finished with 19 points, Uy added 17, Palo made 14, and Yap scored 11 points.

Lo paced 888 with 19 points, Rey Pandoro shot  17, Tan delivered  15, Jolly Castillo contributed 10, and Richard Co with 8 points.

In the second game, Paolo Li dropped 15 points to give RU a 26-23 opening quarter lead. Mark Coo and Mark Binguan teamed up for 15 points for Buddy.

Buddy shifted to a half court man-to-man defense that scuttled the offensive set of RU and the trio of Badong Eufre, Franklyn Madrid and Fr. Clarence Canafe joined hands with 9, 8 and 7 points, respectively, putting Buddy on  top at the break, 53-38.

The lead ballooned to 65-42 with 4:58 left in the third quarter led by the low post attacks of Charlton Ong, Jerky Ong and Fr. Canafe.

After Mark Binguan’s triple produced the biggest lead of the game at 26 points, RU relied on their three-point shooting and utilized their height advantage to control the boards and produce fastbreak points led by Li’s seven points to cut the deficit to 70-57 going to the payoff quarter.

As the outside shooting of Johann Kendrick went south, RU continued their comeback courtesy of Chris Javelosa, Li , Biboy Yap and Ton Ton Chua.

Chua’s triple finally gave the lead to RU at 79-78.

But Madrid, Binguan and Eufre nailed successive treys against the free throw shooting and inside points of Javelosa for an 87-84 lead. Binguan iced the game with two free throws for its third win in four starts.

Eufre finished with 19 points, Binguan added 15, Canafe chipped in  13, Madrid scored 11, Coo and Charlton Ong shot 8, and Jerky Ong with 6 points.

Li produced a game-high 29 points, Yap and Javelosa wound up with 15 points and Chua scored 13 points.*NAB
