2012 WVRAA venues

Upgrading of the playing venues and billeting areas for the 2012 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet continues as the March 12 opening ceremonies at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium draws near.

Getting a facelift in time for the competition are the volleyball, basketball, and lawn tennis courts at the Paglaum Sports Complex.

Elementary boys’ volleyball will be played at the Paglaum Complex along with secondary girls’ basketball and elementary and secondary girls’ lawn tennis, archery, elementary and secondary boys’ baseball and elementary and secondary girls’ softball.

Karen Dinsay of the Capitol said they have yet to confirm if boxing icon Manny Pacquiao will attend the kick-off ceremony as the main guest speaker.

She said the organizers are also eyeing World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes as guest during the opening rites.

Simultaneous with the main events, also to be held during the March 12-16 schedule is the competition among the visually impaired, mentally challenged and ortho/amputees.

Events to be contested in the visually impaired group are 100 meter dash, standing long jump and shot put for athletics, while the mentally challenged athletes will compete for the gold, silver and bronze in 100m, 200m, 400m and 4 X 100m running events; long jump, shot put. All events will be for both boys and girls categories.

The winners will represent Western Visayas in the 2012 Special Games in the Palarong Pambansa in Lingayen, Pangasinan in May.*NAB
