SP TELLS GOLEZ
Observe DILG memo
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

A resolution urging Bacolod Rep. Anthony Golez Jr. to observe Republic Act 10121, Department of Interior and Local Government memorandum circular 2010-143, and Executive Order 888 Series of 2010, primarily on the local disaster risk reduction management program, was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

Authored by Councilor Homer Bais, the resolution said the pronouncement of Golez that “proceeds of the event (Jam Step) will go to the construction of the Bacolod Disaster Preparedness Center and the production of disaster kits and survival manuals to be distributed to the people of Bacolod City,” is a duplication of the city’s mandate on local disaster preparedness program pursuant to the law and issuances earlier mentioned.

Meanwhile, a resolution requesting the Office of the Building Official and the City Engineer’s Office to conduct immediate inspection of public and private buildings, schools and bridges to determine its structural integrity after the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the city and Negros provinces, and to recommend measures to make all structures in the city safe, was authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito.

The resolution said the 6.9 magnitude earthquake on February 6 that struck the Negros Island and ravaged some structures in some cities and towns including San Carlos, Dumaguete, Guihulngan, Tanjay, among others, resulted for the loss of lives of at least 52 persons in Negros Oriental.

It said Bacolod City experienced the intensity of the earthquake which alarmed the public and resulted in the suspension of classes and early closing of work places.

The resolution said serious inspections should be conducted to make sure that the buildings are safe, particularly those frequented by the public.

It said some schools in Bacolod City have been existing for such a long time and should also be inspected to determine if these are still safe to be used or may need renovation.

The inspection should be conducted the soonest possible time due to the advisory that aftershocks will last for a week and  might continue to damage structures, the resolution added.*CGS
