Class A teams eye semis in
Tan Kek Pin basketball

Crucial games are scheduled this weekend in the 12th Tank Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup with the competing squads in Class A scrambling for a semifinal slot.

JSY Transport will play Talisay City at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the semifinals, while USLS Nhojs will also try to conquer UNO-R Polvora’s Law office for an automatic semis seat at 4:30 p.m.

The opening game will be for better quarterfinals position between Fil-Sino and Rogers/Province at 3 p.m.

In Class B, Rapide Auto Experts slipped past NRich Multipurpose Cooperative, 91-90, while Sta. Fe Resort registered its fifth victory as it outlasted Nena’s Rose II Shopping, 84-80, at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym, Wednesday night.

Dr. Emil Guanzon drilled a right quarter court trey with 10 seconds left in the game to complete the comeback for Rapide and notched its first victory in the tournament.

Jose Miguel Montinola scored 16 points and Rey Jara added six points to give Rapide a 26-19 opening quarter lead.

But Nrich rallied past Rapide at halftime to take a 40-38 lead as Julius Teruel shot 10 points and Tubby Villanueva had five points.

With Teruel exploding with with 18 points in the third quarter and teammate Chief Supt. Adonis Rosales adding 10 points, Nrich registered a 70-61 lead going to the payoff quarter despite Montinola’ s 10 big points for Rapide.

With Rapide’s defense focusing on Teruel, Nrich relied on Rosales and Arvin Gustilo for their offensive production but Rapide countered with a more balanced attack to steal the victory as Montinola added 10 more points to his credit.

Montinola topscored for Rapide with 35 points, Galunan added 16, Uysang 15, Jara with 7 points and Guanzon had 6 points.

Teruel finished with 32 points, Rosales picked up 25, Richard Tan and Gustilo delivered 11 points each.

Meanwhile, Sta. Fe Resort remained the only unbeaten team in Class B with five victories as Clarence Quingco led the squad with 17 points in a recent triumph over Nena’s Rose.

Jan Jan Young and Ren Ren Lacson shot 12 points each, Michael Ang and Bol Manaloto hit 11 points apiece and Johann Villanueva made 8 points for Sta. Fe.

Nena’s Rose was down in the opening quarter, 22-13, and engaged Sta. Fe in several lead changes in the next two quarters and trailing by a point at 61-60 going to the fourth quarter. But Sta. Fe kept its unbeaten slate alive as they never surrendered the lead in the fourth quarter.

Vincent Tan and Kenderson Hao paced Nena’s Rose with 14 points each, Victor Go Jr. added 13, Matthew Yap with 9 points.*with a report from Stephen Tan
