Relief operations for victims of the 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Negros Oriental were conducted recently by Merci Bakeshop and Negros Grace Pharmacy.
It was led by Jonathan Lo for Merci and by Bea Lo Yao for Negros Grace Pharmacy. They gave canned goods, rice, noodles, breads, gallons of purified drinking water, and vitamins for residents of Brgy. Manghulyawon and Brgy. Talayong in La Libertad, a press release from the group said.
Roadside signs that read “We need food and water” or “SOS” with tents set up on vacant lots were seen in the towns where the impact of the quake was greatly felt.
Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg. Or., 1st District) suggested that the team give help to the two remote barangays in La Libertad, since previous relief operations had not yet reached these locations, the press release said.
Limkaichong guided them to Manghulyawon where residents, headed by Brgy. Captain Neri Timtim, had been waiting for them.
Manghulyawon kagawad Georgia Camero said they still felt the ground shifting for two nights, and that some were worried about going back to their hillside huts and instead opted to temporarily live in tents on the flat lands.
Fortunately, no one in their community died from the quake, the press release added.
Brgy. Talayong was the next stop where residents, headed by Brgy. Captain Teresita Gallosa, braved the cold rain to receive the relief goods.
The group went last to the Philippine Red Cross headquarters in Guihulngan, where packs of relief goods and bottles of one-liter and five-gallon purified drinking water were received by Ulysses Sannoy, the press release added.*
