76 inmates enroll
with ALS studies

Bacolod City District Jail Chief Insp. Gilbert Peremne yesterday said 76 inmates of the Bacolod City District Jail have enrolled with the  Alternative Learning System so they can finish their studies.

Peremne said  23 are enrolled in the elementary level program, and the rest are in high school level.

The inmates enrolled at the ALS program at the Bacolod District jail are already the second batch, Peremne said, adding that 30 detainees have completed the eight-month training.

Reynaldo Catito, 48, of Brgy. Singcang-Airport, Bacolod City who have been detained at the district jail for three years now on illegal possession of firearms charges, said he joined the ALS training to improve himself.

Catito, who only completed second year high school, said he wants to pursue a college degree when he regains his freedom so he can help his family. He said his children aged 21, 18, 12 and 5, were proud of him when they learned that he went back to school through ALS.

Meanwhile, Joseph dela Cruz, 48, of Brgy. 12, Bacolod City, who has been in jail for 9 years now for allegedly raping his stepdaughter, said he enrolled with ALS to learn how to read and write.

Dela Cruz, who only reached grade 2, said he can write his name but he does not know how to read.

After completing the eight months ALS training the inmates will be given examinations and if they pass, they will be given diplomas.*Leony May Ruiz
