Two killed,
8 injured at dance

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

Two were killed and eight were injured when a former member of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army exchanged fire with one of them at a benefit dance in Brgy. Kapitan Ramon in Silay City, Negros Occidental, at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The fatalities were identified as Richard Centina, 40, of Hacienda Cumabat, Brgy. E. Lopez, Silay and Sonny Boy Tongcua, 41, of Sitio Mambucog in Talisay City by Silay City police chief, Supt. Rosauro Francisco.

Centina sustained gunshot wounds on his chest, left arm and feet and was rushed to the Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital in Bacolod City, where he died while being treated, while Tongcua, who had a lone gunshot wound on the back, was declared dead on arrival at the same hospital.

Investigation showed that Centina and the suspect Ryan Layo, of Hacienda San Rafael in Brgy. Guimbalaon, Silay, had a heated argument over a still unknown matter before the shooting happened.

Witnesses claimed that Layo, accompanied by three unidentified men whose faces were covered with handkerchiefs, went to the benefit dance in Hacienda Lapus and opened fire at Centina, who managed to shoot back.

The exchange of fire between Centina, Layo and his companions resulted in the injuries of Mark Derbin Bacera, Mark Guardiano, and Johnny Lima, all 16 years-old and residents of Brg.y. E. Lopez, their neighbors, Glegorio Guardiano, 43; Marcelo Gonzales, 44; and Herman Dela Cruz, 42; Joel Mainge, 49, of Brgy. Kapitan Ramon; and Dalton Mayo, 18, of Brgy. Guimbalaon, Silay, Francisco said.

Bacera sustained a lone gunshot wound on his right side, Mainge was hit on his left side and Dela Cruz, Lima Mayo and Gonzales on their stomach, left leg, right arm and face, respectively, Francisco also said.

He added that the younger Guardiano had a gunshot wound on his left side and the elder Guardiano on his left side and right leg.

A manhunt operation was launched against Layo and his companions, who escaped right after the incident. An empty shell of a garand rifle, two empty shells of carbine and an empty shell of a .45 caliber pistol were recovered from the crime scene, police records showed.

Victor Sumulong, RPA spokesperson, told ABS-CBN Bacolod that Layo is their former member but had been inactive for three years now.

The incident happened barely three weeks before the first anniversary of a massacre in March last year, where four Brgy. Kapitan Ramon officials were killed by their former barangay captain Noel Ayalin, who is now tagged as the most-wanted personality of Negros Occidental.*APN
