DTI orders price freeze
in earthquake-hit areas

The Department of Trade and Industry has ordered a price freeze in earthquake-affected areas the first district in Negros Oriental, because of reported artificial increases in the prices of basic and prime commodities.

At least, 44 stores were found to be jacking up prices and taking advantage of the situation, reports reaching the DTI indicated.

Of this number, 12 stores were found overpricing in Guihulngan; nine in La Libertad; five in Jimalalud; four in Tayasan; and 14 in Ayungon, DTI regional director Aster Caberte said. She will lead a calamity “diskwento caravan” today in La Libertad and tomorrow in Jimalalud.

Brgy captain supervising
giving of relief goods killed

Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo has condemned the assassination of a barangay captain in Binobohan, Guihulngan City, who was supervising the distribution of relief goods.

Barangay Captain Roberto Ricabo was shot at close range by an unidentified man recently, inside the chapel where relief goods are stocked.

Degamo said he has directed the Philippine National Police to dig deeper into the case, and pursue all possible angles. He theorized that the killing could be in relation to the distribution of relief goods in the area..

Rebels extend sympathy
to victims of deadly tremor

The Leonardo Panaligan Command of the New Peoples Army in Central Negros issued a statement extending its sympathy to the victims of the recent earthquake that claimed the lives of 82, including children, with 61 missing.

The statement dated February 17 said that while the tragedy was a natural occurrence, it was triggered by man-made actions that resulted in the destruction of the environment and irresponsible actuations of certain local officials.

If further claimed that mining operations are undertaken in several barangays in Guihulngan, such as phosphate mining in barangays Hibaiyo, Imelda and Bulado and manganese mining in Brgy. Calupaan, in violation of the provisions of the Mining Act of 1995, under Republic Act No. 7942.
