Local seafarers dominate
2012 Iloilo Regatta race

Local seafarers from Arevalo district and Tigbauan and Leganes towns in Iloilo ruled the almost 25-kilometer sea race in Sunday’s 40th Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival held at Villa Arevalo, Iloilo City.

Category A paraw NINIA of Hector Espinosa from Barangay Sto. Nino Sur, Arevalo, Iloilo City received P50,000 for topping Category A, while entry CHERYLYN of Federico Tantiado from Brgy. Parara Sur, Tigbauan, Iloilo pocketed P75,000 for besting other entries in Category B.

Other winners in Category A and their corresponding prizes were second placer PIRANHA 3 (P30,000) of Benito Gordoncillo from Barangay Camangay, Leganes, Iloilo; third placer ARLYN (P18,000) owned by Orlando Demetillo, also from Barangay Camangay, Leganes.

In Category B, second placer was MARJOHNEC (P50,000) and third placer KRISTINE (P20,000), both owned by Hector Espinosa.

This year’s sea race was participated by a total of 74 native outriggers, 45 of which competed in Category A with a waterline length of 16 feet and below, while the 29 paraws competed in Category B with a waterline length of 16.1 feet and above.

The participating sail boats took off Sunday morning from the shoreline at Tatoy’s Manokan passing various markers in the wind-swift Iloilo Strait at Fort San Pedro in Iloilo City toward Sto. Rosario in Buenavista and Nagaba Point in Jordan, all of Guimaras province, before returning back to the homebound route at Tatoy’s Manokan via Bundolan Point in Jordan, Guimaras.

The Paraw Regatta Festival coincided with the opening of the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association Sports Olympics hosted by Iloilo City.*PNA
