Coconut row
triggers killing of 2
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

A construction foreman died in a hospital yesterday after relatives of his neighbor, whom he was suspected to have killed over coconuts, allegedly ganged up on him and stabbed him in Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod City, Sunday night.

The fatalities were foreman Jimmy Paypon, 49, and Romaldo Barena, 55, both of Purok Gaisano, Brgy. Alijis.

Investigation showed that at about 7 p.m. Sunday, Barena was having drinks with his companions, whose names were not disclosed, near his house when Paypon came and stabbed him repeatedly without provocation.

Barena sustained stab wounds on his chest and arms and was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, where he died while being treated.

Paypon immediately fled after the stabbing, bringing with him the bladed weapon he used.

However, he returned to his place a couple of hours later and went to the house of Barena, supposedly to apologize for what he did. However, three of the victim’s relatives, whose names the police withheld, ganged up on him and stabbed him.

He was hit in his stomach and back and was also rushed to the CLMMRH, where he died while being treated, at about 5 a.m. yesterday.

Pangue said Paypon may have harbored anger against Barena when he did not allow Paypon’s son to gather coconuts from the tree near his house sometime last year.

He said they are preparing to file charges for murder for the killing of Payopolin against Barena’s relatives, who have evaded arrest.*APN
