The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has been asked to conduct an assessment survey of the Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao in Sibulan, Negros Oriental.

Mario Aragon, Community Environment and Natural Resources officer II, said the recommendation, was discussed in the meeting of the Protected Area Management Board recently.

The Twin Lakes has been under the management of PAMB since it was declared as a natural park.

Aragon said they want to ensure that the entire area of Twin Lakes is safe from any cracks after the magnitude 6.9-earthquake that hit the province early this month.

He said they cannot discount the possibility that there could be disturbance underneath the lake because residents saw the discoloration of water after the tremor. He added that they hope the assessment will be done soon to allay the fears of Sibulan and San Jose residents that the lake might develop cracks due to aftershocks.

Ma. Carmencita Arpa, science research specialist II of the Geology and Geophysics Division of PHIVOLCS, said the soil surrounding Twin Lakes is compact and will not easily collapse.

She said a survey of the lake done years ago showed that it is protected by Mount Guintabon.

Dr. Arturo Daag, chief science research specialist of PHIVOLCS, said they will conduct another survey of Twin Lakes to ensure its safety.

Former Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary, Dr. Angel Alcala, also recommended immediate action from the local government units and agencies concerned, like PHIVOLCS.*MA
