PDRRMC revises report on quake infra damage

City to stop illegal quarrying
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Dumaguete City officials are reportedly determined to stop small-scale illegal quarrying at the Banica River  despite opposition from those who insist that the sand and gravel extraction is their only source of income.

Earlier, officials of the city Environment and Natural Resources Office and the provincial Environment and Natural Resources Division of Negros Oriental met with residents to warn those engaged in illegal quarrying about possible arrest for violating the law.

Dick Encabo of the ENRO said the city is also recommending that a joint resolution be passed by barangay councils of Taclobo, Batinguel and Bagacay to organize those engaged in small-scale quarrying into a legitimate association so they can apply for a permit from the provincial ENRD.

expired food packages

The mysterious appearance of food packets, with expiry dates going back as far as 1995, on Silliman Beach in Bantayan, Dumaguete City, recently, continues to baffle local officials.

Angeline Gonzalez, chief of the Consumer Welfare and Business Regulation Division of the provincial Department of Trade and Industry, said she contacted the distributor of these expired products, but they claimed they had no idea how these items found their way to the shores of Bantayan.

The distributor explained that normally, expired or bad products are taken down the store shelves and returned to the head office in Metro Manila, she added.

on quake infra damage

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council has submitted a revised earthquake damage report, particularly on infrastructure, in Negros Oriental.

In its report to Secretary Voltaire Gazmin of the Department of National Defense, PDRRMC said damage to infrastructure stood at P507.3 million, instead of P665 million, as earlier reported.

The amended report excludes national highways and bridges. It only covers damaged provincial roads at P35 million; spillways and minor structures at P2 million; water works at P105 million; school buildings – P251.7 million; and district hospitals, rural health units, barangay health and city health officers at P113.6 million.
