The Mines and Geosciences Bureau is recommending the permanentrelocation of more residents who are also in danger of being buried by landslides in two barangays in Isabela.
Dr. Leilanie Suerte, MGB 6 geologist, said yesterday that they discovered that residents living at the base of the mountains in barangays San Agustin and Limalima in Isabelaalso face the danger of being crushed by loose boulders from the mountains, in case an earthquake or heavy rains hit.
In Barangay San Agustin, there are about 100 households affected, and they are still determining the number in Barangay Limalima, she said.
Before permanent relocation, she said residents of such areas should evacuate from their homes when heavy rains or earthquakesoccur as these could trigger landslides.
On Wednesday Suerte also recommended the permanent relocation of about 200 households living at the foot of a mountain in Barangay Maytubig, Isabela town, Negros Occidental, who are in danger of being buried by a landslide.
She said Isabela is just behind Guihulngan City on the Negros Oriental side where a landslide after the recent magnitude 6.9 earthquake killed scores of people.
Isabela Mayor Francis Malabor yesterday said the town government will hold dialogs with the affected residents on options they can take and on findingrelocation sites.
Suerte’s team will inspect reported landslide-prone areas in La Castellana today.
Meanwhile, Civil Defense Regional Director Rose Cabrera said a nationwide earthquake drill will be held on March 1.
All local governments and schools are urged to join.
A local chief executives forum on geohazards will also be held on March 8, she added.*CPG back
