Twenty-five farmer technicians from Hinigaran, Moises Padilla, and representatives from the Capitol Government Employees Multi-Purpose Cooperative and the private sector recently completed their three-day training in Sustainable Agriculture for Ecological Restoration in Victorias City.
Edna Garde, manager of the Farmers Information and Technology Services Center of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, yesterday said the training aims to help farmers produce organic products without harming the environment and other resources.
Magsasaka Siyentista Ramon Peñalosa trained the farmers in sugarcane and swine-based integrated farming system, natural and organic farming system, agripreneurship, and agritourism, Garde said.
The farmers were also trained in how to prepare their agripreneurial proposal, business plans, and other matters related to agripreneurship, she also said.
Garde said farmers can submit their proposals to CAPGEM, Quidan-Kaisahan, and to the Negros Cooperative Bank for financing but they must pass the standards and requirements needed from each financing institution.
Among their were sunflower production, swine breeding, and rice-based and sugarcane-based integrated farming systems, she also said.
The farmers are expected to share their new insights to other farmers in their areas to create a collective and mass implementation of new farming techniques, Garde said.
She added that FITS-OPA is willing to help farmers’ organizations who went to train and learn new organic farming practices with Peñalosa, who is the Magsasaka Siyentista of OPA and Western Visayas Agricultural Resources and Research Center Development Consortium. *LTG
