‘I can’t let him go’

Dear Tita,

Mike and I have been sweethearts for three years. I love him very much and I want to marry him someday. He is a maritime graduate, very ambitious and has a lot of dreams for his future. Late last year, he told me he was finally going abroad and was just waiting for his ship to sail in 2012. I felt a bit apprehensive as I know that there will be lots of temptations in the different ports he will go to. I told him about my fears and he brushed them off, saying I was imagining things. I then asked him what will become of us but he was evasive in his answer.

A few weeks ago, he received a call to go to Manila to board his ship on March 2. He then told me that he had been giving this matter a lot of thought and that he decided that we should break off to give each other space so we could find out if we are really meant for each other. I was shocked at this. I cried and told him I never tried to crowd him in and that he was always free to decide. I said we could still go on even if he was far away but he insisted that it would be best to break off our relationship for now.

Tita, what am I going to do? I don’t want to lose him. He is the only man I have ever really loved. I can’t understand why he wants us to break off. Does this mean he never loved me at all? This is the first time my heart got broken and it’s unbearable. I cry all the time and I can’t perform well at work. How can I get Mike to change his mind? Please advise me on what to do.

ACHING HEART

Dear Aching Heart,

The fact that Mike had given this matter a lot of thought means that he really wants to be free. Perhaps the love he felt for you had slowly gone cold or maybe he doesn’t have any plans of marrying you at all. His going abroad has given him the opportunity to be free to do what he wants with his life. I’m sorry to say this but the guy doesn’t love you anymore and the sooner you accept this, the better for you. Stop thinking of what-might-have-beens. It’s over. It’s time to pick up the pieces and move on.

TITA
