Guv to launch P1.95-M
poultry project in Sagay

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. will launch and turn over the P1.95 million “Backyard Broiler Contract Growing Project in Negros Occidental” tomorrow to 12 families in Sagay City, who are also recipients of the Gawad Kalinga housing projects.

Anna Leah Silva, project development officer of Technology and Livelihood Development Center, said each family will receive 200 to 208 heads of broiler chicks that will help them in their livelihood and livestock production.

The project will also address economic development, food security of the province, and enhance their capability building, she said.

Silva said they have turned over to Sagay the first batch of broiler chicks on Feb. 2, which will be ready for disposal next month.

They choose broiler chicks for the project because these only take 30 to 35 days to grow and are easy to market, she added.

Silva said the recipients do not have to worry where to sell their produce because the marketing for these will be handled by the Huager Multipurpose Cooperative.

The cooperative will also take charge of buying new sets of broiler chicks once they are disposed of, she said.

Sagay City and the towns of Manapla, EB Magalona, and Pulupandan are the pilot local government units of the project, Silva said, and this will be expanded to other LGUs once it is successful and sustainable.

The project also aims to make the recipients become producers of dressed chickens in their locality and enable them to sell at a much cheaper price, she also said.

Meanwhile, all recipients will be trained on chicken dressing and good manufacturing next week to help them improve their production services, Silva added. *LTG
