UNDOC: No transport strike;
But protest rally set in March

They will not go on strike but will hold a protest rally on March 15 calling for the review of the Oil Deregulation Law and oil price increases, Nilo Frias, deputy chairperson of the United Negros Drivers Operators Center, said yesterday.

Frias said the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide, the mother-organization of UNDOC will hold a week-long protest action from March 12 to 16, but have an option whether to go on strike or not.

He said they will not go on strike on March 12 because it is also the opening of the 2012 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet.

“We do not want to hamper the regional meet and we are currently negotiating with the Department of Education-Negros Occidental to be the official transport service for the athletes,” Frias said.

On March 15, they will hold a transport caravan and a short rally in front of the Fountain of Justice at the Bacolod City downtown area, he said.

Frias also said that they want the government to take a look at the Oil Deregulation Law as it has not helped local drivers.

He added that lawmakers have to review the law as oil prices are continuously increasing, while local transport fares remain the same.

Leaders of the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry have announced their support to UNDOC, he said.

MBCCI president Frank Carbon said the law has not served its purpose of bringing down the cost of oil and bringing in more players in the oil industry to control oil price increases. *LTG
