17-year old suspect in death
of construction worker yields

A teenager tagged as the suspect in the fatal stabbing of a construction worker at the Bacolod City downtown area, surrendered to Radio Mo Nationwide yesterday, and told the police he only did it to defend himself.

The 17-year-old, whose name the police withheld, said he and his girlfriend had come from a wake and decided to buy burgers at a food stand at the junction of Luzuriaga-Locsin Streets at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

While they were waiting for their burgers, he claimed, the victim, Cyrus Carampatana, 28, of Brgy. Estefania, Bacolod, approached and harassed his girlfriend.

The teenager said he scolded Carampatana, and this led to a scuffle until the victim allegedly drew a knife from his waistband and tried to stab the teenager, who managed to wrest it from him and stab Carampatana and twice. He then left with his girlfriend because they were afraid the victim's companions may take revenge.

A witness claimed that he saw the teenager taking Carampatana's wallet, but the teenager denied it.

Police said Carampatana sustained two stab wounds on his face and chest and was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Hospital, where he died while being treated.

Supt. Santiago Rapiz, head of the Bacolod Police Special Operations Group, said that the teenager will be endorsed to the Women and Children's Complaints Desk.

Rapiz assured the teenager's mother of her son’s safety.*APN
