DPWH gets P1B for
better nat’l roads

MANILA – The Department of Budget and Management has released P1 billion to the Department of Public Works and Highways to cover the preventive maintenance of 139.627 kilometers of national roads nationwide, a government press release said.

Budget and Management Secretary Florencio Abad, said the released fund is from the Special Support Fund of the Motor Vehicle Users Charge.

The P1-billion release is consistent with our goal to improve and rehabilitate the country’s roads to optimize structural soundness and lengthen their design life. The DPWH has made a commitment to have 15,872 kilometers of national arterial roads to be 100 percent paved by 2014, Abad said.

The P1-billion will be used as a counterpart funding for National Roads Improvement and Management Project II.

NRIMP-2 is the second phase of a three-year program of establishing management systems to upgrade and preserve the National Road System environmentally, socially and financially.

The project will address the maintenance and improvement of national arterial roads and bridges through long-term performance-based contracts and expansion of the national preventive maintenance program.

The DPWH hopes to pave 94 percent of the 15,872 kilometers of national arterial roads and 74 percent of the 11,428 kilometers of national secondary roads by end-2012.

It targets 100-percent pavement of all national arterial roads by 2014 and all national secondary roads by 2016.

All 7,793 national bridges — 330,089 lineal meters long — will be made permanent by 2012. Of the total bridge length, 104,293 LMs are due for repair or rehabilitation while 8,544 LMs of temporary bridges will be made permanent.*
