IN DUMAGUETE
No oil spill feared as
ship yields fuel

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Successful retrieval operations of diesel fuel recently from a grounded cargo ship off the coast of Canday-ong in Calindagan, Dumaguete City, have eased fears of an oil spill.

Lt. Commander Agapito Bibat, head of the Philippine Coast Guard-Dumaguete Station, reassured the public that there is no danger of oil seepage from the M/V Ever Transport III, as containment measures and suction operations have been conducted.

During the retrieval last week by the M/V Morning Glory, close to 12,000 liters of diesel fuel were siphoned off the M/V Ever Transport III that ran aground on Dec. 17 after Tropical Storm Sendong battered Dumaguete City and other parts of the province.

IN VALENCIA
Work begins on temporary roads

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The local government unit of Valencia in Negros Oriental is looking for options to reconstruct roads damaged by Tropical Storm “Sendong” in the province.

Valencia Mayor Ricky Gonzalez yesterday said the LGU of Bayawan City has informed him that a bulldozer will help clear debris at the Palinpinon Road, about five kilometer of which was washed out by flashfloods on December 17.

Sendong dumped about 120 mm of rain on Dumaguete, Valencia, Sibulan and other parts of the province, causing rivers and other waterways to overflow and damage millions of pesos worth of infrastructure.

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Philippine Army troops in Negros Oriental observed the directive against indiscriminate firing of guns during the New Year’s Eve celebration.

So far, no reports have been received about soldiers firing their guns during the revelry Saturday to welcome the New Year.

Earlier, Col. Francisco Patrimonio, commander of the 302nd Infantry Brigade based in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, reminded the Philippine Army units to refrain from firing their issued weapons during the observance of the New Year.
