bags 3 gold medals

FIDE Master Sander Severino of Silay City, Negros Occidental, won  three gold medals in the chess category in the 6th Asean Para Games held in Solo, Indonesia, recently,  press release from Silay City said.

Severino said  his father,  Saul,  and mother, Ninfa,  are his inspiration. When he was 5 years old, he used to watch his father play chess, the press release said.

He  thanked Silay City Mayor Jose Montelibano and the Sports Committee of Silay  for  their   support.

The ASEAN Para Games is a biannual regional multisport event held two weeks after the end of every Southeast Asian Games. Athletes compete in 11 categories:  Athletics, Power Lifting, Swimming, Archery, Table Tennis, Wheelchair Tennis, Chess, Badminton, Goal Ball, Bowling, and Sitting Volley, in approximately 400 competitions, the press release said.

Earlier, three out of four championship awards were also garnered by the City of Silay in volleyball men’s team category coached by Arno Pescuela,  and Joel Dequilla, volleyball women’s team category coached by Alex Balili and Nilo Pescuela and 40 up basketball team category coached by Verne Villarias and “B-bing” Gamboa,  in the awarding night of 1st Congress Albee Benitez Cup 2011. Second runner-up was also awarded to the open basketball team coached by Brgy. Kagawad Atoy Callora and Ryan Jabor.

Bronze medal was awarded to Timothy John Sellado and the Silay City swimming team in the provincial meet in the Panaad Stadium. Four silver medals and three bronze medal was also given to the Silay City swimming team in the Iloilo Sports Complex, the press release added.*
